Our Programs

Education

We are building new spaces and services, housed in a welcoming, safe environment in order to better educate our community. Through our STEM program, GED classes, learning centers and more, we hope to provide free resources to educate and strengthen.

Community

We have a long history of service to South Los Angeles, going back over 60 years. We take pride in being a trusted and respected member of the community and a part of its rich history of community leaders.

Rehabilitation

We have taken steps to support a vulnerable population through programs that strengthen educational opportunities, employment, housing options and personal and community relationships. We want to build on our existing services with new housing for those in need and better tools to educate.

Avalon-Carver has partnered with Dr. Joy DeGruy—renowned researcher, psychologist, social worker, and author of “Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing”—since 2015. Our partnership has included collaborations around education and teacher trainings, parent education workshops, and rites of passage facilitator trainings.

DeGruy’s research has been pivotal in helping African American communities build protective factors that cultivate positive attitudes, values, and beliefs, strengthen social supports, and nurture mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health needs. Her wisdom and understanding of the unique needs of African American communities is invaluable! We look forward to our continued collaborations as we build our capacity to liberate, unify, and heal our community together.
